Marriage licenses in the
State Archives date from 1826-1929, but the records are incomplete and
does not account for all marriage licenses from those years.
All marriage licenses dating from 1826-1895 contain
only the names of the bride and groom, their place of residence and date
of the license. No other family information was required or recorded.
However, beginning in 1896 marriage licenses recorded
additional family information from the bride and groom, such as: nationality,
previous marital status, place of residence, and the names and nationality
of their parents.
Indexes to the licenses are available and are alphabetical
by the last name of either the bride or groom. The index will also cite
the date and the book and page where the license was recorded.
If you are unable to visit the Archives to access the
indexes, please email us with the name of the bride and groom and their
Island of residence. We will conduct a search of the indexes and inform
you whether the Archives has a copy of the marriage license or not.
